Solar Eclipse and Eye Safety

A total solar eclipse is probably the most spectacular astronomical event that most people will experience in their lives. There is a great deal of interest in watching eclipses, but it must be done safely.  Because of this exceptional opportunity, there is concern that people will be more likely to stare at the Sun during this event.  Improper viewing of the Sun during an eclipse can result in eye injuries such as the development of "eclipse blindness" or retinal burns.  Please see article for more info.

Our school community is reeling from the recent unexpected loss of two of our students. Our hearts and prayers go out to the families and friends of these two young women at this difficult time. Though school is out of session, we have brought in grief counselors to our schools and community to assist students and staff in coping with this tragedy, and those counselors continue to be available. I ask parents and the community to join the school district in assisting our young people as they process this loss. Be a shoulder for them to lean on, touch base with them on how they are feeling, and please do not hesitate to reach out to the school counselors and mental health professionals if you feel a child needs additional assistance.  Members of our Crisis Response Team are available to meet with students individually and in groups toady as well as over the coming weeks.  Please feel free to bring your child to Menifee County High School or Central Office for these services.  We have information that may be helpful to you in discussing these tragedies with your children.  Please do not hesitate to contact us at 768-8002 with any questions or concerns.

School Bus Safety School Bus Safety Billboard

School bus drivers use a flashing signal light system to alert motorists of what is about to happen:

  • Yellow flashing lights indicate that the bus is preparing to stop to load or unload children. Motorists should slow down and prepare to stop their vehicles.
  • Red flashing lights and extended stop arms indicate that the bus has stopped and that children are getting on or off the bus. Motorists must stop their cars and wait until the red lights stop flashing, the extended stop sign is withdrawn, and the bus begins moving before they can start moving again.
